In addition to her work as a funeral director, Mrs. Coote-Brown was actively involved with the American Girl Scouts, serving as the leader of Providence Baptist Church Girl Scout Troop 850. She was instrumental in establishing award winning troops at Providence Church, where she assisted numerous girls in obtaining the "Silver" and "Gold" awards. As a leader in the Girl Scouts, she organized and facilitated trips for many local girls to the Girl Scout World Lodge in England and Mexico.
Mrs. Coote-Brown was an active member of Providence Baptist Church, where she was baptized at an early age. As a young girl, she was a member of the Junior Choir and the Youth Orchestra. Later, she became a member of the Philathea Club and the Alert Club in which she held several offices including the position of President. At the time of her death, she was a member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church. She was a member of Parent Body Missionary Society #1 and the Capital Campaign Committee.
Cassie Coote-Brown was a member of the Eastern Star, Magnolia Chapter and past president of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. She served as a board member of the Girl Scouts- Tar Heel Triad Council and as Service Unit 22 Manager. She was also a member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society, a women's leadership group affiliated with United Way of Greater Greensboro. She received numerous community awards including The Girl Scout Thanks Badge I and II, and was the recipient of the 1994 WFMY-TV "2 Those Who Care" award.
Mrs. Coote-Brown was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Colonel Fleming T. Cheek Jr., and her husband Perry J. Brown.
She is survived by two sons, Charles (Pamela) of Greensboro, Michael (Gwendolyn) of Charlotte and one daughter, Candita of the home; five grandchildren, Ashley, Lauren, Alex, Krystin and Kyndal; two sisters, Marva Gettis of Atlanta, Ga., and Shirley Samuels of Greensboro; sister-in-law Geraldine Cheek of Hampton, Va.; three nieces and three nephews; numerous cousins and a host of family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held today at Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church. Visitation will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the funeral to follow at 12 p.m.
