Rosemary (Gyles) Mayhew was born on January 1, 1931 in Colman, SD to Earl and Hattie (Lewis) Gyles. Rosemary graduated from Alexandria High School in 1949. She married Clifford (Putt) Mayhew on August 8, 1950 in Alexandria. To this union was born one daughter, Susan. They made their home in Alexandria for over 40 years before they moved to Mitchell. After graduation Rosemary worked as an aide at St. Joseph Hospital in Mitchell. She later worked at the Hanson County Courthouse in Alexandria in the Treasurer’s, Sheriff’s and Auditor’s offices for over 30 years. She was elected and re-elected as the Hanson County Auditor, a position that she held until she retired.

Rosemary was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alexandria and later Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell where she was a member of the Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998, her parents, a sister, Joyce and an infant sister, Margaret Ann.
