DROWNED LAST FRIDAY
A sad case of drowning occurred last Friday afternoon in a slough on the Elmore place across the Tillamook River from Dad Tomlinson's.
It appears that Leo Norton, age 12, went after Georgie Biggs to go in swimming with him and they both went to the slough together, they were in the water some time and Georgie couldn't swim very well. The supposition is that as the tide was full and the water quite deep he got over his head and could not get to the shore again.
The body was first discovered in the evening by D Tomlinson, who went up the slough in a boat, the body was laying face downward in the mud close to a log. The heart-stricken father was sent for and appeared on the scene. The Coroner C.E. Reynolds, Marshall Clements and Mr Taylor went down after the body returning about 9 o'clock. The body was in the water about three hours and when found was barely submerged as the tide had been ebbing.
The boy was just past 13 years old and a good home little fellow. The remains were laid to rest in the Odd Fellows Cemetery east of town the following day after services at the M.E. Church. The sympathy of the entire community is with Mr Al Biggs in this, his sad hour of trial.
Tillamook Herald- August 14, 1902

**Note- this article, from the Tillamook Herald, says that Georgie drowned on Friday, (which was Aug 8th) and was buried the next day.
Another article, in the Tillamook Headlight, stated that the drowning occurred on Thursday afternoon.(August 7th) and was buried on Friday. I have not been able to verify which is correct.
