US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1851 and was Somerset County District Attorney from 1853 to 1856 and a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1860. From 1861 to 1868 he was Somerset County Clerk. He ran for Congress as a Republican in 1864 and appeared to lose a close election, but successfully contested the outcome and took his seat in the middle of the term. He was reelected in 1866 and served from 1866 to 1869. He then returned to Somerset and resumed his law practice while also serving as counsel for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. He made a return to politics as a member of the Pennsylvania House from 1899 to 1902. In 1906 he oversaw publication of a multi-volume work on the history of Bedford and Somerset County.
