Former Anthony, New Mexico, resident Mr. William Pritchett, 97, passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.

Viewing will be 5 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 29, 2015, at Harding Orr & McDaniel Funeral Home, 320 Montana Ave., in EI Paso, Texas. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at the Anthony Community Cemetery in Anthony, New Mexico, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife, Lucille. The Rev. Scott Talbert from First Baptist Church in Anthony will officiate.

William was born June 16, 1918, to George Henry and Alta Mae (Young) Pritchett in Thornburg, Arkansas. He graduated from Gadsden High School, having moved from Arkansas to Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 1931. William lived in Canutillo, Texas, from 1935 until 1940, before making Anthony his home. He entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 10, 1942, during WWII and had served our nation until he was honorably discharged as a Corporal on February 12, 1946. After the war, he returned to Anthony, where he worked with his father in the family-owned Pritchett's Blacksmith Shop. William bought the business from his father in 1955 and became a blacksmith and certified welder until he retired from the business in 1980. He was a longtime member of the Anthony First Baptist Church and attended the Abbott Loop Community Church in Anchorage. William enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching basketball and college football.

He loved his Lord, his wife, his family and his extended family. He served his community in Anthony in a quiet unassuming way. He was always available to help anyone with anything, especially all his extended family. He was a simple, educated man who had great wisdom about life and he shared this by example. He was described by all who met him as a kind gentleman. His relatives and close friends knew him as "an amazing Christian man who lived by his word and an awesome fishing and hunting buddy." He loved to visit with people and always had a story to share on his favorite topic, fishing. He loved sharing the fish he caught with friends and family. While living in Alaska, family time was built around camping trips, afternoon drives to see the countryside, storytelling, and watching baseball and football. In Alaska he changed his loyalties to the Mariners and Seahawks.

"He faced all the challenges of his life with God's grace and a positive attitude that all will be well. His doctor asked him if he would share with her other patients on how 'to grow old gracefully.' When his wife passed away, he told his daughter that 'her life was in Alaska and she needed to go home so that he could adjust to his new life.' When his daughter told him a 90 year old man should not live alone and he had to move to Alaska, he said 'OK, but I am not going to drive up there.' He faced the changes in his life from his recent accident, which left him disabled, with that same positive attitude that God is in charge and he would be OK. His life is a testament of how to do it right. He went home to be with the Lord with his family at his side," wrote the family.

William was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 51 years, Vernal "Lucille" (Corn) Pritchett; her parents, sister, brother-in-law and extended family; siblings, Clarence Arthur Pritchett (Willeta Locke), Nora Aline Pritchett, Ollie Pauline Webb (Troy Webb), George Henry Pritchett Jr. (Elizabeth Catherine Lipps), Ralph Emerson Pritchett, Raymond Everett Pritchett and Glenda Mae Pritchett.

He is survived by his daughter and son in-law, Billye and Fred Goff II of Anchorage; grandson, Frederick Goff III of Anchorage; sister, Mildred Marie (Pritchett) Johnson of Puyallup, Washington; brother, James Arthur Pritchett (Stella Bullard Pritchett) of Hitchcock, Texas; sister in-law, Mildred Ardella (Holton) Pritchett of Estancia, New Mexico; brother in-law, Raymond Carl Brandstrom of EI Paso, Texas; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family wants to thank Dr. Rosenbaum, Dr. McVeigh, her palliative care team, and all the staff at Providence Medical Center for their support and excellent care during these last weeks.
