Gualter Macedo Bernardo, 88, formerly of Poolesville, MD, and Buckeystown, MD, died at home in Chesapeake Beach, MD on Oct. 2, 2015, due to complications associated with Alzheimer's disease. Gualter (Walter) was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the only child of Antonio and Philomena Bernardo. At 18 years of age, he emigrated to the U.S. and enlisted in the US Army. An Army ranger, he was stationed in Germany and served as a guard during the Nuremberg Trials. When he returned to the US, he settled in Montgomery Co., MD and rented a small garage where he repaired furniture in the evenings. Over the next 40 years, Gualter became an old world master artisan in antique restoration, and the refinishing of fine furniture. His small garage evolved into Bernardo & Co, serving customers in the Washington DC area, including the White House, Smithsonian Institution, Naval Observatory and several residences of Embassy row.
Gualter had a great laugh and was very young at heart. He was a master swimmer into his seventies, and and a lifelong avid boxing fan. He is survived by 5 children. Linda Reyes of Union Springs, NY, Layna Frye of Fishkill, NY, Cindy Bernardo of Chesapeake Beach, MD, Anthony Bernardo of Arlington, VA, Joseph Bernardo of Pittsburgh, PA, and many grand and great grand children. Services will be private.
