Captain John Candler was born between 1758 and 1764 in Colchester, England. He came to Marblehead, MA with Captain Petrick before he married Abigail Hulin in 1890. She was the widow of Thomas Russell (fought along with Captain James Mugford). Candler was a Captain and commanded many ships which are listed in the book " Old Marblehead Sea Captains and the Ships On Which They Sailed" by Benjamin Lindsey 1915. Both he and Abigail lived in Marblehead, but wintered in Savannah, GA. He and Abigail had at least 5 children together; John Jr., Edward, William, Mary Ann Wood and Eliza. Later, after Abigail died, John married Abigail Baily Pedrick. The marriage lasted a very short time before Abigail died. John married a third time to Cynthia Avery. In his later years John was a cotton merchant in Savannah, GA.

It has been noted that John Sr. and John Jr.'s lives have been intertwined. Sometimes both have been reported to have commanded the same ships. Both John Sr, and John Jr. were buried in the same Green Street Cemetery, Marblehead, MA. This was verified by the Cemetery Department (Waterside Cemetery) in Marblehead, MA.
