Gasaway Selby was the fourth child of Richard Selby and Elizabeth (Betsy) nee Selby Boyles Selby. Richard Selby was born in unknown, VA. Betsy was born in OH or VA. Richard had been married and widowed by Sarah Cade, daughter of Moses Cade, of Randolph Co., VA. Richard and Sarah had four or five children by 1830. Anexey, the eldest son, was born in VA. An unknown daughter, a son Garrett, and another unknown son were born by 1830. Sarah died of unknown causes and Richard needed a mother for his youngest children. He took out a marriage license in Jun 1832 to marry a Miss Fisk, but she declined. In Jul 1832, he married a widow, Elizabeth "Betsy" Selby Boyles, who may or may not have been related to Richard. Betsy helped raise Sarah and Richard's children while establishing their own family. Patrick, Josephus, Catherine C, Gasaway, Orinda, and possibly a young Richard, unless he was a grandson from the first marriage. All were born in Ohio except Orinda, and the young Richard whose parentage has not been established.
