Arlene Faye Rietveld was born on September 11, 1930, at Pella, Iowa. She was a daughter of Clarence and Bernice Dabb Rietveld. Arlene was united in marriage with Dexter Dwight Schakel on June 6, 1947, in Knoxville, Iowa. The couple was blessed with seven children: Linda F. Jeffrey D., Chris A., Candie L., Matthew J., Steven A. and Wendy L. Arlene loved spending her life with her extended family. She had many hobbies and enjoyed quilting and trapping or fishing with her late husband, Dexter, who passed away in 2005. Arlene was also preceded in death by three sons: Jeffrey, Chris and Matthew Schakel and her daughter, Candie Barger; a grandson, Steven Ongna; her parents, Clarence and Bernice Rietveld; her two brothers: Fred and Lloyd Rietveld and her sister, Arvena (Jacob) Schuring; and her parents-in-law, Jacob and Mary Leona Woods Schakel. Arlene is survived by three children: Linda and her husband, Arvin Angove, Steve Schakel and his wife, Christina, all of Knoxville, Iowa, Wendy Schakel and Aaron Bailey of Ottumwa, Iowa; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Dena Rietveld; a sister-in-law, Linda (Lloyd) Rietveld; and a brother-in-law, Hubert (Norma Schakel) Hollingshead. Arlene passed away on Friday, April 3, 2015, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella, Iowa at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 22 days.
