George F. Briegel was a composer and arranger of band music, a music publisher and a music dealer. He played violin until he joined the band at the United States Military Academy at West Point. While there he mastered the trombone and received training in conducting and music theory. He joined the 22nd Regiment Band and later became its conductor. He operated a music publishing house that bore his name at 1270 Sixth Avenue in Manhattan. He became conductor and band leader of the FDNY Band in 1920 and was its head until 1950. Breigel opened offices at 1674 Broadway after becoming convinced that bands were not receiving the attention they should.
