He lived at Richmond Lodge, Boughton, Chester. In 1935 he worked for the Hudson Bay Company, Canada. On the 25th May 1936 at Liverpool & District Aero Club, he got his Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificate on a Avro Avian, Gypsy I, 90 hp. He was a Pilot Officer of No.72 Fighter Squadron. On the 23rd July 1937 he departed from RAF Sealand, Flintshire heading for RAF Church Fenton, North Yorkshire. He was piloting a Gloster Gladiator I K6133, single seater fighter aeroplane when it crashed at Hermit House Farm, Gawber, near Barnsley. A witness said 'the plane was going like lightning.' There was a screaming sound followed by a crash, then a wall of flame shot 70 feet high. His plane had hit the ground at 200 mph. The cause of the crash was attributed to clouds obscuring the ground. He was 26 yrs old when he was killed. He was buried on the 28th July 1937.
