Edward Harold (Mike) Carpenter, age 83, died December 4, 1992 in Bountiful, Utah.

Born November 21, 1909 in Canyon City, Colorado, to Albert B. and Lillian Powell Carpenter. Married Flora Horne, October 1, 1932 in Salt Lake City.

Mike left school early, but like many self-educated men, he had a great desire for knowledge and pursued it diligently. He began working for the railroad in his teens, and worked until his retirement for D&RGW Railroad, as a yard foreman in the Roper, Utah yards, He was frequently called upon to solve special problems. He initiated the double piggy back procedure for hauling truck trailers loaded with autos on railroad flat cars. After being rejected by the draft in World War II, he was requisitioned especially as a transportation specialist. He served in Africa, Iran, Russia, Eastern Europe, and was discharged as a Captain five years later after the personnel and equipment had been returned. He was a member of Persian Gulf Command Veterans Organization. He obtained a private pilots license and enjoyed flying his own plane. Because of his work schedule, he was inactive, but he supported his wife in her activities, Utah Pioneers, etc., even though not a member of her church. He enjoyed buying books and giving them to Judge Memorial High to encourage students to read extensively. His wife died in 1978, they had no children.

He is survived by two sisters in law: Beulah Horne, Sun City, Arizona; Mrs. Douglas (Norma) Carpenter, and several nieces and nephews.
