Henry Amos Tefft was born at Union Village (now Greenwich Village), New York, about 1822. After completing his law degree he moved to Racine, Wisconsin, where news of the gold discovery in California called him farther west. He left Wisconsin in 1848 and traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, then followed the Gila River route to San Diego. Arriving at San Luis Obisbo county early in 1849, he decided to remain and opened a law practice. He was elected to serve as a member of the California Constitutional Convention at Monterey from August to October 1849. He married Maria Josefa Dana y Carrillo at the Dana family's Rancho Nipomo on July 9, 1850. Just a year and half later Henry drowned while attempting to come ashore in rough surf at Port San Luis. His body was not recovered. A month after Herny's death his son, Henry, was born. His widow Josefa married Samuel Adams Pollard at Mission San Luis Obispo on December 20, 1854, with whom she had five children.
