Billy Drinkwater went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, October 27, 2015.
He was born on September 6, 1926, in Morgan, GA. Billy was the son of Jesse and Julia Drinkwater of Dawson, GA. He was a graduate of Dawson High School. After graduation, he worked at the Cinderella Peanut Butter Factory and J.C. Penny’s. On November 30, 1948, at the age of 22, he enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. After his Basic Training, he was stationed at Travis Air Field in Savannah, GA, where he met the love of his life, Mary Frances Burgess, of Garden City, GA. On May 20, 1950, they were married. He served during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. After 20 years of service to our country, he retired in 1968. When he was not stationed abroad, he was a resident of Garden City, GA, where he lived the rest of his days. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked at Savannah Bank and then at Equipment Sales. In 1971, he co-founded Westside Rental, Inc. He was the owner/operator there until he retired in 1991. He was a former member of the Garden City Lions Club and served as President from 1977 until 1978. He served on the Chatham County Library Board as Vice-Chairman. He was a deacon and served as chairman at Calvary Baptist Church in Emerado, ND, and at First Baptist Church of Garden City. He taught several men’s Sunday School classes over the years and loved studying God‘s Word. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, five sisters and one great-grandchild.
The visitation will be on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The funeral will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home with burial to follow at 1:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery located at 1600 Wheaton Street in Savannah.
