Obituary for Clifton S. Ross

Clifton S. Ross passed peacefully at Good Shepard's Hospice on Tuesday after a short illness. He was 93 years old. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 57 years, Marion Ross (nee Charles) in 2007. Both Cliff and Marion were teachers in the Patchogue-Medford School District, Marion at River Avenue Elementary and Cliff at the High School where he taught Physical Education and Drivers Ed and coached the Boys Varsity Basketball team in the late 50s and early 60s.
Cliff was born on September 24, 1919, the second of five children in Warrensburg, N.Y. to Cassius Ross and Nellie Ross (nee Searles). Following the death of his father the young family moved to Crown Point, N.Y. where Cliff spent his youth. He was attending Cortland State during the war years but following the loss of his brother, Bernal, in a submarine in the Pacific and his brother Carleton, having survived Pearl Harbor, Cliff left school for the Army Air Corp and was stationed at Randolph Field in Texas for the remainder of the war.
Cliff and Marion started their family in Orchard Park, N.Y then moved to Patchogue where they raised their family. Cliff was a fiddler in the Celtic style and enjoyed relaxing days on the Great South Bay and at Davis Park. He was predeceased by his brothers, Bernal and Carleton, and his sister, Twila.
