MITCHELL RAINEY SIMONS
Born About 1907 ~ December 12, 1920

Son of Mr. and Mrs. J.Z. Simons

TRAGIC DEATH OF 13 YEAR OLD BOY

Mitchell Rainey Simons, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.Z. Simons, met a tragic death last Sunday at two o'clock, when he was covered by three tons of dirt which fell from the top of a tunnel the boys were digging.

From the information we could gather concerning the unfortunate accident it seems that two of Mr. Simons' boys, Mitchell and Eugene, and Jess Wilhite, an orphan boy; Lucky Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Johnson and Buster Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phelan Thompson were at play just west of the Simons' home at Sand Springs, one mile east of Valliant. They had undertaken to dig a tunnel, using a gulley as a starting point. They had succeeded in digging to a depth of four or five feet. The dirt above them caving in burrying Mitchell Simons, Buster Thompson and the Wilhite boy. The two younger boys, Lucky Johnson and Eugene Simons, were on the outside and the prompt action of these five year old boys probably saved the lives of two boys.

When the cave in occurred it covered the three boys, and left the end of a hoe handle sticking out. The Johnson boy grabbed the hoe handle and pulled it out and began digging manfully to uncover his playmates, while the little Simons boy ran for help. All of the boys were unconscious when they were removed and it took heroic action to save the Thompson and Wilhite boys, but nothing could be done for Mitchell. He had been dead several minutes when he was removed from the tunnell.

The remains of the little fellow were laid to rest in the City Cemetery on Tuesday.

The entire community deeply sympatizes with Mr. and Mrs. Simons and other relatives over the loss of their bright boy.
