Joshua Browning was a 6'2" farmer who lived in Brooks County, Georgia. He enlisted with the "Brooks Rifles" alongside his brother Cornelius Robert Browning. In Co C, the Brooks Rifles became part of the 61st Regiment, Georgia Infantry. Joshua's daughter Sarah told the story that before leaving to be mustered into service in Charleston, South Carolina in May 1862, her mother Prudence Jane Simms killed a hog and fried up some meat for her husband to take with him on the train. Joshua left his little family behind with Sara age 5, son Asa about 4, and wife Prudence expecting their third child. It was only about two months later that his loved ones received the news that Joshua died of typhoid fever in the Langhorne Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia. Whether he fought in the Battle of Gaine's Mill, 27 June 1862 in presently unknown as he passed away 9 July 1862. Five months later his son William H Browning was born. Thanks to the meticulous records of the Diuguid Burial Records we have his physical description including a shoulder width of 21 inches. Joshua is buried in the Old City Cemetery of Lynchburg, Virginia; Lot 160; 3rd Line; No. 7.
