KILLED BY AUTO
POPULAR SANITARIUM CHAPLAIN MEETS UNTIMELY DEATH SATURDAY.
Was Crossing East Main Street at Newark Ave. When Run Down; Driver of Car Not Blamed.
Inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Elder George C. Tenney, Sanitarium chaplain, who died Saturday evening after being run over by a heavy truck at the corner of East Main street and Newark avenue, will be held Wednesday afternoon, Coroner Carl Gray announced today.
Testimony to be given at the inquest will include that of witnesses of the tragedy, who have already been interviewed by Chief of Police Ralph Day, who is conducting an investigation today. Chief Day said the witnesses told him that Rex Rodman, colored truck driver of 360 Goldwater street, and driver of the truck which killed Elder Tenney, was driving cautiously at the time of the accident. Rodman fainted when he saw the aged minister crushed beneath the wheels of his truck.
The accident happened at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when Elder Tenney with Mrs. Tenney and their grandson, George, were crossing East Main street at Newark avenue to board a street car after having visited the grave of his son, Evers, at Oak Hill Cemetery.
According to Mrs. Tenney, who witnessed the accident, she and her little grandson, George, had crossed through the line of automobiles, but did not believe that her husband, who was lame, would attempt a crossing. As she reached the curb across the street, she turned, to see her husband on the pavement being dragged by the truck. Other witnesses claimed the front wheel passed over his head.
Taken to Sanitarium.
A passing motorist conveyed the elder with his wife and grandson to the Sanitarium hospital where he was attended by Dr. James T. Case. His skull was found to be fractured, while his right ear was torn off. Internal injuries were also found. Death came at 6:50 p.m.
The funeral is to be held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Sanitarium chapel, south end of the main building, entrance from the south end. Rev. M. B. Kelly, pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist church, will conduct the services, assisted by Dr. Chas. W. Heald, of the Sanitarium medical staff.
Dr. Kellogg, superintendent of the institution, is absent in the East but is expected to return Tuesday morning and will make some remarks on behalf of the institution. Rev. S. B. Crandell will speak on behalf of the Ministerial association of the city.
The pass bearers are as follows: Dr. Wm. H. Riley; George H. Murphy, M. W. Wentworth, Dr. E. L. Eggleston, Dr. F. B. Johanson and Frank Tappan.
George Cyrus Tenney was born at Liberty, PA., August 27, 1847, where he lived until eight years of age when his parents moved to Wisconsin and settled on a farm.
While still a young man he decided to devote his life to the ministry and after his graduation from college in 1876, was ordained a minister. For the next ten years he labored in the Seventh Day Adventist church, preaching in churches of Wisconsin, North Dakota and Minnesota. Then he went to Australia where for five years he was a minister as well as editor and publishing manager for the Seventh Day Adventist denomination in that country.
Upon his return from Australia he became for the first time connected with the Sanitarium as a member of the college teaching staff, while conducting editorial work on medical religion. After five years in this work he again returned to Australia to resume extension work for the church, remaining there another five years.

In 1891 he again returned to Battle Creek where he was an instructor in the medical training school of the Sanitarium college and at the same time edited "The Medical Missionary Magazine," which was published at that time at the Sanitarium. Since that time, he has been continuously connected with the Sanitarium, serving for the last fifteen years as an elder of the Seventh Day Adventist church and as chaplain at the Sanitarium.
Elder Tenney is survived by his wife, Elsie L. Tenney, as one daughter, Mrs. Ralph C. DeVault of Chicago. Mr. DeVault was formerly connected with the Sanitarium as a photographer and only recently went to Chicago to enter the motion picture field. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. John Tenney, and a nephew and niece who reside on Manchester street.
One son, Evers, died about a year ago. Two grandsons, Ivan and George, are the sons of Evers Tenney.
Through his sermons and writings on medical religion and travel, Elder Tenney was known throughout the United States. As a young man, he traveled around the world, and later published a book in 1895, called "Journeys by Land and by Sea."
During the last few years Elder Tenney has been exceedingly active in educational and religious departments of the Sanitarium, having been editor of the "Welfare Bulletin," director of the two libraries, and bible teacher in the training school for nurses. He was prominent in the movement to establish a home for aged and infirm missionaries in this city."

Home is one of the sail experiences of this life with which all are more or less familiar. The uncertainty that enshrouds earthly experiences f*** and prospect helps much to make it what it is. When one leaves his fireside, even for a day's labor, there is an anxiety for his return that is most fully expressed in the tlie [?] joyous homecoming at evening. The joy of his presence is heightened by gratitude for his escape from the possible evils.
Swarm around every path in life. Much more, then, when hundreds and thousands of leagues of unknown ways live before the traveler, do feelings of sadness and foreboding hover over him as he crosses the threshold of home with the purpose of putting the whole world between him and that loved spot.
In mid-winter, farewells were said to friends in the central part of the United States, and we entered upon the first stage of our journey in route to the Pacific coast. That winter was an unusually severe one. The last night of travel east of the Missouri River was well calculated to leave a lasting impression of what a Minnesota and Iowa winter can be. A lively lizard raised, and the cold was intense. It was with difficulty that the train made any progress. At times the wheels would struggle with the accumulation of snow, going slower and slower till they surrendered, and then we would wonder what next. But by dient [?]
of shoveling and some vigorous ramming with the small snow plow attached to the engine the bond would be broken, and we proceeded. Inside the car it was impossible to keep warm; and between shivering with the cold and shaking with an apprehension of being derailed it ethegelatine [?]
and jerking of the train, we were almost put out of joint with ourselves. This experience did much to alleviate the pain of separation which one actually feels when leaving the land of his childhood, even for a temporary sojourn in warmer latitudes.
As the storm on that night was in it earlier stages, the drifting snow did not compel a resort to such means as are shown in the illustration opposite this page. But it is not uncommon in the northern states, where the snow falls deep, to see three or four powerful locomotives with gigantic snow plow in front, pushing their way through drift, while the snow flies and small avalanches on either side. Such a scene is full of excitement to the beholders, and is fraught with danger to the engine men who can only crowd on steam and rush blindly forward with all the force those great machines can master. When at last they can go no farther, they are reversed, backed up a mile or so, and then with full ferry around into the yielding snow.
From Kansas City our course was by Santa Fe route. We were soon hurried over the level Plains of Kansas, and out of the region of snow, except for the highlands of New Mexico and Arizona. This was in the early days of the "tourist sleepers." These cars were without any upholestry, and so constructed that the seats could be converted into birth at night, and a hanging above would be let down, thus furnishings sleeping accommodations equal to the seating capacity. Each passenger provided his own bedding and cared for it. In each end of the car patient [?]
stove on which water might be heated and some of the similar forms of culinary work carried on. The USAV [?]

KILLED BY AUTO
POPULAR SANITARIUM CHAPLAIN MEETS UNTIMELY DEATH SATURDAY.
Was Crossing East Main Street at Newark Ave. When Run Down; Driver of Car Not Blamed.
Inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Elder George C. Tenney, Sanitarium chaplain, who died Saturday evening after being run over by a heavy truck at the corner of East Main street and Newark avenue, will be held Wednesday afternoon, Coroner Carl Gray announced today.
Testimony to be given at the inquest will include that of witnesses of the tragedy, who have already been interviewed by Chief of Police Ralph Day, who is conducting an investigation today. Chief Day said the witnesses told him that Rex Rodman, colored truck driver of 360 Goldwater street, and driver of the truck which killed Elder Tenney, was driving cautiously at the time of the accident. Rodman fainted when he saw the aged minister crushed beneath the wheels of his truck.
The accident happened at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when Elder Tenney with Mrs. Tenney and their grandson, George, were crossing East Main street at Newark avenue to board a street car after having visited the grave of his son, Evers, at Oak Hill Cemetery.
According to Mrs. Tenney, who witnessed the accident, she and her little grandson, George, had crossed through the line of automobiles, but did not believe that her husband, who was lame, would attempt a crossing. As she reached the curb across the street, she turned, to see her husband on the pavement being dragged by the truck. Other witnesses claimed the front wheel passed over his head.
Taken to Sanitarium.
A passing motorist conveyed the elder with his wife and grandson to the Sanitarium hospital where he was attended by Dr. James T. Case. His skull was found to be fractured, while his right ear was torn off. Internal injuries were also found. Death came at 6:50 p.m.
The funeral is to be held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Sanitarium chapel, south end of the main building, entrance from the south end. Rev. M. B. Kelly, pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist church, will conduct the services, assisted by Dr. Chas. W. Heald, of the Sanitarium medical staff.
Dr. Kellogg, superintendent of the institution, is absent in the East but is expected to return Tuesday morning and will make some remarks on behalf of the institution. Rev. S. B. Crandell will speak on behalf of the Ministerial association of the city.
The pass bearers are as follows: Dr. Wm. H. Riley; George H. Murphy, M. W. Wentworth, Dr. E. L. Eggleston, Dr. F. B. Johanson and Frank Tappan.
George Cyrus Tenney was born at Liberty, PA., August 27, 1847, where he lived until eight years of age when his parents moved to Wisconsin and settled on a farm.
While still a young man he decided to devote his life to the ministry and after his graduation from college in 1876, was ordained a minister. For the next ten years he labored in the Seventh Day Adventist church, preaching in churches of Wisconsin, North Dakota and Minnesota. Then he went to Australia where for five years he was a minister as well as editor and publishing manager for the Seventh Day Adventist denomination in that country.
Upon his return from Australia he became for the first time connected with the Sanitarium as a member of the college teaching staff, while conducting editorial work on medical religion. After five years in this work he again returned to Australia to resume extension work for the church, remaining there another five years.
Returned Here in 1891.
In 1891 he again returned to Battle Creek where he was an instructor in the medical training school of the Sanitarium college and at the same time edited "The Medical Missionary Magazine," which was published at that time at the Sanitarium. Since that time, he has been continuously connected with the Sanitarium, serving for the last fifteen years as an elder of the Seventh Day Adventist church and as chaplain at the Sanitarium.
Elder Tenney is survived by his wife, Elsie L. Tenney, as one daughter, Mrs. Ralph C. DeVault of Chicago. Mr. DeVault was formerly connected with the Sanitarium as a photographer and only recently went to Chicago to enter the motion picture field. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. John Tenney, and a nephew and niece who reside on Manchester street.
One son, Evers, died about a year ago. Two grandsons, Ivan and George, are the sons of Evers Tenney.
Through his sermons and writings on medical religion and travel, Elder Tenney was known throughout the United States. As a young man, he traveled around the world, and later published a book in 1895, called "Journeys by Land and by Sea."
During the last few years Elder Tenney has been exceedingly active in educational and religious departments of the Sanitarium, having been editor of the "Welfare Bulletin," director of the two libraries, and bible teacher in the training school for nurses. He was prominent in the movement to establish a home for aged and infirm missionaries in this city."

Home is one of the sail experiences of this life with which all are more or less familiar. The uncertainty that enshrouds earthly experiences f*** and prospect helps much to make it what it is. When one leaves his fireside, even for a day's labor, there is an anxiety for his return that is most fully expressed in the tlie [?] joyous homecoming at evening. The joy of his presence is heightened by gratitude for his escape from the possible evils.
Swarm around every path in life. Much more, then, when hundreds and thousands of leagues of unknown ways live before the traveler, do feelings of sadness and foreboding hover over him as he crosses the threshold of home with the purpose of putting the whole world between him and that loved spot.
In mid-winter, farewells were said to friends in the central part of the United States, and we entered upon the first stage of our journey in route to the Pacific coast. That winter was an unusually severe one. The last night of travel east of the Missouri River was well calculated to leave a lasting impression of what a Minnesota and Iowa winter can be. A lively lizard raised, and the cold was intense. It was with difficulty that the train made any progress. At times the wheels would struggle with the accumulation of snow, going slower and slower till they surrendered, and then we would wonder what next. But by dient [?]
of shoveling and some vigorous ramming with the small snow plow attached to the engine the bond would be broken, and we proceeded. Inside the car it was impossible to keep warm; and between shivering with the cold and shaking with an apprehension of being derailed it ethegelatine [?]
and jerking of the train, we were almost put out of joint with ourselves. This experience did much to alleviate the pain of separation which one actually feels when leaving the land of his childhood, even for a temporary sojourn in warmer latitudes.
As the storm on that night was in it earlier stages, the drifting snow did not compel a resort to such means as are shown in the illustration opposite this page. But it is not uncommon in the northern states, where the snow falls deep, to see three or four powerful locomotives with gigantic snow plow in front, pushing their way through drift, while the snow flies and small avalanches on either side. Such a scene is full of excitement to the beholders, and is fraught with danger to the engine men who can only crowd on steam and rush blindly forward with all the force those great machines can master. When at last they can go no farther, they are reversed, backed up a mile or so, and then with full ferry around into the yielding snow.
From Kansas City our course was by Santa Fe route. We were soon hurried over the level Plains of Kansas, and out of the region of snow, except for the highlands of New Mexico and Arizona. This was in the early days of the "tourist sleepers." These cars were without any upholestry, and so constructed that the seats could be converted into birth at night, and a hanging above would be let down, thus furnishings sleeping accommodations equal to the seating capacity. Each passenger provided his own bedding and cared for it. In each end of the car patient [?]
stove on which water might be heated and some of the similar forms of culinary work carried on. The USAV [?]

The explanation of this fact is that in the locating these lines precipitous portions of the mountains are avoided, and the low passes with long gradual approaches are selected because they are so much for soul [?] for real race [?]. KILLED BY AUTO
POPULAR SANITARIUM CHAPLAIN MEETS UNTIMELY DEATH SATURDAY.
Was Crossing East Main Street at Newark Ave. When Run Down; Driver of Car Not Blamed.
Inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Elder George C. Tenney, Sanitarium chaplain, who died Saturday evening after being run over by a heavy truck at the corner of East Main street and Newark avenue, will be held Wednesday afternoon, Coroner Carl Gray announced today.
Testimony to be given at the inquest will include that of witnesses of the tragedy, who have already been interviewed by Chief of Police Ralph Day, who is conducting an investigation today. Chief Day said the witnesses told him that Rex Rodman, colored truck driver of 360 Goldwater street, and driver of the truck which killed Elder Tenney, was driving cautiously at the time of the accident. Rodman fainted when he saw the aged minister crushed beneath the wheels of his truck.
The accident happened at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when Elder Tenney with Mrs. Tenney and their grandson, George, were crossing East Main street at Newark avenue to board a street car after having visited the grave of his son, Evers, at Oak Hill Cemetery.
According to Mrs. Tenney, who witnessed the accident, she and her little grandson, George, had crossed through the line of automobiles, but did not believe that her husband, who was lame, would attempt a crossing. As she reached the curb across the street, she turned, to see her husband on the pavement being dragged by the truck. Other witnesses claimed the front wheel passed over his head.
Taken to Sanitarium.
A passing motorist conveyed the elder with his wife and grandson to the Sanitarium hospital where he was attended by Dr. James T. Case. His skull was found to be fractured, while his right ear was torn off. Internal injuries were also found. Death came at 6:50 p.m.
The funeral is to be held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Sanitarium chapel, south end of the main building, entrance from the south end. Rev. M. B. Kelly, pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist church, will conduct the services, assisted by Dr. Chas. W. Heald, of the Sanitarium medical staff.
Dr. Kellogg, superintendent of the institution, is absent in the East but is expected to return Tuesday morning and will make some remarks on behalf of the institution. Rev. S. B. Crandell will speak on behalf of the Ministerial association of the city.
The pass bearers are as follows: Dr. Wm. H. Riley; George H. Murphy, M. W. Wentworth, Dr. E. L. Eggleston, Dr. F. B. Johanson and Frank Tappan.
George Cyrus Tenney was born at Liberty, PA., August 27, 1847, where he lived until eight years of age when his parents moved to Wisconsin and settled on a farm.
While still a young man he decided to devote his life to the ministry and after his graduation from college in 1876, was ordained a minister. For the next ten years he labored in the Seventh Day Adventist church, preaching in churches of Wisconsin, North Dakota and Minnesota. Then he went to Australia where for five years he was a minister as well as editor and publishing manager for the Seventh Day Adventist denomination in that country.
Upon his return from Australia he became for the first time connected with the Sanitarium as a member of the college teaching staff, while conducting editorial work on medical religion. After five years in this work he again returned to Australia to resume extension work for the church, remaining there another five years.
Returned Here in 1891.
In 1891 he again returned to Battle Creek where he was an instructor in the medical training school of the Sanitarium college and at the same time edited "The Medical Missionary Magazine," which was published at that time at the Sanitarium. Since that time, he has been continuously connected with the Sanitarium, serving for the last fifteen years as an elder of the Seventh Day Adventist church and as chaplain at the Sanitarium.
Elder Tenney is survived by his wife, Elsie L. Tenney, as one daughter, Mrs. Ralph C. DeVault of Chicago. Mr. DeVault was formerly connected with the Sanitarium as a photographer and only recently went to Chicago to enter the motion picture field. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. John Tenney, and a nephew and niece who reside on Manchester street.
One son, Evers, died about a year ago. Two grandsons, Ivan and George, are the sons of Evers Tenney.
Through his sermons and writings on medical religion and travel, Elder Tenney was known throughout the United States. As a young man, he traveled around the world, and later published a book in 1895, called "Journeys by Land and by Sea."
During the last few years Elder Tenney has been exceedingly active in educational and religious departments of the Sanitarium, having been editor of the "Welfare Bulletin," director of the two libraries, and bible teacher in the training school for nurses. He was prominent in the movement to establish a home for aged and infirm missionaries in this city."

Home is one of the sail experiences of this life with which all are more or less familiar. The uncertainty that enshrouds earthly experiences f*** and prospect helps much to make it what it is. When one leaves his fireside, even for a day's labor, there is an anxiety for his return that is most fully expressed in the tlie [?] joyous homecoming at evening. The joy of his presence is heightened by gratitude for his escape from the possible evils.
Swarm around every path in life. Much more, then, when hundreds and thousands of leagues of unknown ways live before the traveler, do feelings of sadness and foreboding hover over him as he crosses the threshold of home with the purpose of putting the whole world between him and that loved spot.
In mid-winter, farewells were said to friends in the central part of the United States, and we entered upon the first stage of our journey in route to the Pacific coast. That winter was an unusually severe one. The last night of travel east of the Missouri River was well calculated to leave a lasting impression of what a Minnesota and Iowa winter can be. A lively lizard raised, and the cold was intense. It was with difficulty that the train made any progress. At times the wheels would struggle with the accumulation of snow, going slower and slower till they surrendered, and then we would wonder what next. But by dient [?]
of shoveling and some vigorous ramming with the small snow plow attached to the engine the bond would be broken, and we proceeded. Inside the car it was impossible to keep warm; and between shivering with the cold and shaking with an apprehension of being derailed it ethegelatine [?]
and jerking of the train, we were almost put out of joint with ourselves. This experience did much to alleviate the pain of separation which one actually feels when leaving the land of his childhood, even for a temporary sojourn in warmer latitudes.
As the storm on that night was in it earlier stages, the drifting snow did not compel a resort to such means as are shown in the illustration opposite this page. But it is not uncommon in the northern states, where the snow falls deep, to see three or four powerful locomotives with gigantic snow plow in front, pushing their way through drift, while the snow flies and small avalanches on either side. Such a scene is full of excitement to the beholders, and is fraught with danger to the engine men who can only crowd on steam and rush blindly forward with all the force those great machines can master. When at last they can go no farther, they are reversed, backed up a mile or so, and then with full ferry around into the yielding snow.
From Kansas City our course was by Santa Fe route. We were soon hurried over the level Plains of Kansas, and out of the region of snow, except for the highlands of New Mexico and Arizona. This was in the early days of the "tourist sleepers." These cars were without any upholestry, and so constructed that the seats could be converted into birth at night, and a hanging above would be let down, thus furnishings sleeping accommodations equal to the seating capacity. Each passenger provided his own bedding and cared for it. In each end of the car patient [?]
stove on which water might be heated and some of the similar forms of culinary work carried on. The USAV [?]

KILLED BY AUTO
POPULAR SANITARIUM CHAPLAIN MEETS UNTIMELY DEATH SATURDAY.
Was Crossing East Main Street at Newark Ave. When Run Down; Driver of Car Not Blamed.
Inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of Elder George C. Tenney, Sanitarium chaplain, who died Saturday evening after being run over by a heavy truck at the corner of East Main street and Newark avenue, will be held Wednesday afternoon, Coroner Carl Gray announced today.
Testimony to be given at the inquest will include that of witnesses of the tragedy, who have already been interviewed by Chief of Police Ralph Day, who is conducting an investigation today. Chief Day said the witnesses told him that Rex Rodman, colored truck driver of 360 Goldwater street, and driver of the truck which killed Elder Tenney, was driving cautiously at the time of the accident. Rodman fainted when he saw the aged minister crushed beneath the wheels of his truck.
The accident happened at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when Elder Tenney with Mrs. Tenney and their grandson, George, were crossing East Main street at Newark avenue to board a street car after having visited the grave of his son, Evers, at Oak Hill Cemetery.
According to Mrs. Tenney, who witnessed the accident, she and her little grandson, George, had crossed through the line of automobiles, but did not believe that her husband, who was lame, would attempt a crossing. As she reached the curb across the street, she turned, to see her husband on the pavement being dragged by the truck. Other witnesses claimed the front wheel passed over his head.
Taken to Sanitarium.
A passing motorist conveyed the elder with his wife and grandson to the Sanitarium hospital where he was attended by Dr. James T. Case. His skull was found to be fractured, while his right ear was torn off. Internal injuries were also found. Death came at 6:50 p.m.
The funeral is to be held at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Sanitarium chapel, south end of the main building, entrance from the south end. Rev. M. B. Kelly, pastor of the Seventh Day Baptist church, will conduct the services, assisted by Dr. Chas. W. Heald, of the Sanitarium medical staff.
Dr. Kellogg, superintendent of the institution, is absent in the East but is expected to return Tuesday morning and will make some remarks on behalf of the institution. Rev. S. B. Crandell will speak on behalf of the Ministerial association of the city.
The pass bearers are as follows: Dr. Wm. H. Riley; George H. Murphy, M. W. Wentworth, Dr. E. L. Eggleston, Dr. F. B. Johanson and Frank Tappan.
George Cyrus Tenney was born at Liberty, PA., August 27, 1847, where he lived until eight years of age when his parents moved to Wisconsin and settled on a farm.
While still a young man he decided to devote his life to the ministry and after his graduation from college in 1876, was ordained a minister. For the next ten years he labored in the Seventh Day Adventist church, preaching in churches of Wisconsin, North Dakota and Minnesota. Then he went to Australia where for five years he was a minister as well as editor and publishing manager for the Seventh Day Adventist denomination in that country.
Upon his return from Australia he became for the first time connected with the Sanitarium as a member of the college teaching staff, while conducting editorial work on medical religion. After five years in this work he again returned to Australia to resume extension work for the church, remaining there another five years.
Returned Here in 1891.
In 1891 he again returned to Battle Creek where he was an instructor in the medical training school of the Sanitarium college and at the same time edited "The Medical Missionary Magazine," which was published at that time at the Sanitarium. Since that time, he has been continuously connected with the Sanitarium, serving for the last fifteen years as an elder of the Seventh Day Adventist church and as chaplain at the Sanitarium.
Elder Tenney is survived by his wife, Elsie L. Tenney, as one daughter, Mrs. Ralph C. DeVault of Chicago. Mr. DeVault was formerly connected with the Sanitarium as a photographer and only recently went to Chicago to enter the motion picture field. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. John Tenney, and a nephew and niece who reside on Manchester street.
One son, Evers, died about a year ago. Two grandsons, Ivan and George, are the sons of Evers Tenney.
Through his sermons and writings on medical religion and travel, Elder Tenney was known throughout the United States. As a young man, he traveled around the world, and later published a book in 1895, called "Journeys by Land and by Sea."
During the last few years Elder Tenney has been exceedingly active in educational and religious departments of the Sanitarium, having been editor of the "Welfare Bulletin," director of the two libraries, and bible teacher in the training school for nurses. He was prominent in the movement to establish a home for aged and infirm missionaries in this city."

Home is one of the sail experiences of this life with which all are more or less familiar. The uncertainty that enshrouds earthly experiences f*** and prospect helps much to make it what it is. When one leaves his fireside, even for a day's labor, there is an anxiety for his return that is most fully expressed in the tlie [?] joyous homecoming at evening. The joy of his presence is heightened by gratitude for his escape from the possible evils.
Swarm around every path in life. Much more, then, when hundreds and thousands of leagues of unknown ways live before the traveler, do feelings of sadness and foreboding hover over him as he crosses the threshold of home with the purpose of putting the whole world between him and that loved spot.
In mid-winter, farewells were said to friends in the central part of the United States, and we entered upon the first stage of our journey in route to the Pacific coast. That winter was an unusually severe one. The last night of travel east of the Missouri River was well calculated to leave a lasting impression of what a Minnesota and Iowa winter can be. A lively lizard raised, and the cold was intense. It was with difficulty that the train made any progress. At times the wheels would struggle with the accumulation of snow, going slower and slower till they surrendered, and then we would wonder what next. But by dient [?]
of shoveling and some vigorous ramming with the small snow plow attached to the engine the bond would be broken, and we proceeded. Inside the car it was impossible to keep warm; and between shivering with the cold and shaking with an apprehension of being derailed it ethegelatine [?]
and jerking of the train, we were almost put out of joint with ourselves. This experience did much to alleviate the pain of separation which one actually feels when leaving the land of his childhood, even for a temporary sojourn in warmer latitudes.
As the storm on that night was in it earlier stages, the drifting snow did not compel a resort to such means as are shown in the illustration opposite this page. But it is not uncommon in the northern states, where the snow falls deep, to see three or four powerful locomotives with gigantic snow plow in front, pushing their way through drift, while the snow flies and small avalanches on either side. Such a scene is full of excitement to the beholders, and is fraught with danger to the engine men who can only crowd on steam and rush blindly forward with all the force those great machines can master. When at last they can go no farther, they are reversed, backed up a mile or so, and then with full ferry around into the yielding snow.
From Kansas City our course was by Santa Fe route. We were soon hurried over the level Plains of Kansas, and out of the region of snow, except for the highlands of New Mexico and Arizona. This was in the early days of the "tourist sleepers." These cars were without any upholestry, and so constructed that the seats could be converted into birth at night, and a hanging above would be let down, thus furnishings sleeping accommodations equal to the seating capacity. Each passenger provided his own bedding and cared for it. In each end of the car patient [?]
stove on which water might be heated and some of the similar forms of culinary work carried on. The USAV [?]
