Gladys Hanes Howell, age 97, of Beavercreek passed away Monday, October 26, 2015 at Hospice of Dayton. She was born August 10, 1918 on the family farm on Fairground Rd in Beavercreek, the daughter of Cassius and Anna Hanes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clarence "Dan" Howell Jr. and ten siblings. She is survived by her brother Ralph Hanes of Florida, daughter Lynn (Don) Dwyer of Dublin Ohio and son Dan (Lynne) Howell of Beavercreek, six grandsons, DJ (Stephanie) Dwyer, Pat (Becky) Dwyer, Sean (Tara) Dwyer, Matt (Tricia) Howell, Mark Howell and Michael Howell; eight great grandchildren Cara, Conor, Colin, Caitlin, Henry, Lillian, Carson, Kayla; numerous nephews and nieces. Gladys grew up on the farm and went to Hilltop School and attended Beavercreek High School. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing softball with her brothers, sisters and neighboring friends. Throughout her life she was an avid sports enthusiast and loved going to the many games, matches and meets in which her grandsons participated. She had a special fondness for Ohio State Athletics and loved to watch their Basketball and Football teams. She was also a NASCAR fan and followed Jeff Gordon. Growing up on the farm imparted in her a love for all of the animals on the farm. She was especially fond of horses and talked often about her riding adventures. She was a devoted bird watcher and had many feeders in her yard throughout the years. In her twenties she worked at Frigidaire making appliances and later material for the WWII effort and played accordion in a band with her brother Ralph. It was at one of these performances where she met her husband Dan. Gladys will be truly missed. Her stories of growing up on the farm, her "Gladys-isms", her chuckles and laughs were contagious. She was always willing to give and never asked for much in return. She worked hard all of her life and even with difficulty in getting around was driving her car until last year. Gladys was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Beavercreek since its beginning. She volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and Sunday school secretary, helped with Vacation Bible School and for many years actively participated in the Peacemakers organization. The family would like to thank the nurses, and staff at Hospice of Dayton for the care and comfort they provided in Gladys' final days. Also we would like to thank the staffs at Brookdale of Beavercreek and Elmcroft of Xenia for their support of assisted living this past year. A funeral service will be held at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 31, 2015 at 10:30am with Steve Kimm officiating. Visitation will precede the service beginning at 9:30am at the church. Burial site will be at Mount Zion Shoup Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of Dayton.
