Charles Franklin Shuler, 89, of 1742 George Merck Lane, Elkton, VA died on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at home.

He was born on June 10, 1926 at Shenandoah, Virginia and was the oldest son of the late Fred Amos, and Alma Comer Shuler.

Charles served as Postmaster at Elkton for 39 years from January 1, 1950 to January 3, 1989. Prior to that he was a teacher of Vocational Agriculture at Marshall High School and Director of Membership Relations for Rockingham Cooperative Farm Bureau. He was an honor graduate of Shenandoah High School in 1942, and also an honor graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Education w here he was elected to membership in Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.

He was a Veteran of World War II, and while serving in the United States Army attended Language School at the University of Minnesota for one year studying the Japanese language. This was followed by service as an interpreter with Headquarters Company of 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division in Kyoto, Japan in 1946

On September 6, 1958 he married the former Martha Kelly Newton of Slocomb, Alabama who preceded him in death on May 18, 2015. He is survived by one daughter Mary Valentino of McGaheysville; one son Lee B. Shuler and wife Elizabeth of Elkton, VA; and three grandchildren, Ryan Joshua Pettie, Bryant Austin Shuler, and Grace Elizabeth Shuler.

Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Mary Frances Johnson, and husband John of Lynchburg, VA., Mrs. Eva Holtzman of Alexandria, VA; Two brothers Fred Amos Shuler and wife Virginia of Birmingham, Alabama, and Dr. James Marshall Shuler and wife Margaret of Blacksburg, VA. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister Elizabeth Wampler, and son Charles Newton Shuler.

During his long life, he received numerous honors and recognition for civic, religious, and business activities. Among them, President of Elkton Lions Club, Past District Deputy Governor of Lions Club International, 15 years on the Board of Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and Former Trustee of Rockingham-Harrisonburg United Givers Fund.

Life long member of First Christian Church, Shenandoah, Virginia where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Elder, Trustee, Treasurer, and Chairman of the Board. Served on the Local Board of Sovran Bank for 30 years, and was chairman for 10 years. Past President of Chapter 164, National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Life member of Gooden Brothers Post 9292 of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Served as Virginia State President of National Association of Postmasters in 1956, followed by 6 years as State Secretary-Treasurer. Former member of the National Executive Committee, and National Vice President of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States.

Charles was very active in the Masonic Fraternity. He was made a Mason in the Elkton Lodge #74 AF & AM, on May 5, 1952 , which was later renamed the Charles Franklin Shuler Lodge #74 AF & AM in his honor. He served as Master in 1958, and continuously as Secretary from 1959 until 2011.

He was elected Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 1971, and at the time of his death was the Senior Past Grand Master. The Grand Lodge of Virginia honored him with its two highest awards; The George Washington Distinguished Service Medal, and the John Blair, Jr. Medal. He was member for more than 50 years in the Charles Franklin Shuler Lodge #74 AF & AM, Luray Royal Arch Chapter #4, Luray Commandry, Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies, and ACCA Temple of the Shrine. He was coronated a 33 Degree Scottish Rite Mason in 1997. He served on the Board of Governors of the Masonic Home of Virginia from 1989-1996, and was President for three years. He was a member, and Past Patron of Milnes Chapter #3 Order of the Eastern Star, and was a member of the Virginia Eastern Star Home Board.

Charles was President of the Coverstone Cemetery Board (EUB) in Shenandoah for many years.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 11am at First Christian Church in Shenandoah, VA. Burial with Masonic Rites by the Grand Lodge of Virginia will be at the family plot in Coverstone Cemetary. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, from 6-8pm at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 312 Third Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849, or to Coverstone Cemetery, Box 67, Shenandoah, VA. Rev. James Perry and Carl Howard will conduct the service.
