Armecia Eure Black, age 87, of Raleigh, NC and Durham, NC, died surrounded by family at Duke University Hospital, Wednesday, October 21, 2015.

Armecia was born July 24, 1928 in Suffolk, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Secretary of State, Thad Eure and late Minta Banks Eure and was also predeceased by her only brother, Thad Eure, Jr., who died in 1988.

Her family moved to Raleigh from Winton, NC when she was five years old. She graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School, Saint Mary’s Junior College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Journalism. At the University of North Carolina she was President of Chi Omega and a member of the Order of Valkyries.

She was an active, long standing member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Durham. She returned to Raleigh in 1988 to devote herself to the care and support of her parents at the time of her brother’s illness. Since returning to Raleigh she attended the Church of the Good Shepherd.

She was a Sustaining member of the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties, a member of the Durham Debutante Ball Society, The Folio Book Club, the Historic Preservation Society of Durham and the State Capitol Society.

Armecia had a loving nature demonstrated by her never-ending care for others. Some of Armecia’s joys in life included, time with family, caring for her orchids, maintaining long term friendships and spending time at her “lean-to” in Swansboro. Armecia will be long remembered for her incredible penmanship and her love of writing beautiful letters.

Armecia is survived by her children: James Norman Black III of Fletcher, NC; Frederick (Rick) Eure Black and his wife, Debbie Monsein Black, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; Robert Perry Black and his wife, Katherine (Kappy) Carr Black, of Durham, NC and Armecia Lee Black of Durham, NC; Grandchildren: Terry Mouchette Black, Lindsay Nicole Black and Katherine Eure Black; Step-Grandchildren: Melissa Nicole Westbrook, Joshua Eric Bell and Jessica Erin Gill; two great-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren; two nieces, Van Eure, Shelley Eure Belk; one nephew Thad Johnston Eure and numerous cousins.

The service will be held at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, at 403 E. Main St., Durham, NC on Monday, October 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a reception in the church parlor. A private Internment will take place at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh with the Reverend Jonah Kendall officiating. Armecia will be buried in the Eure Family plot.
