Clifford "Cliff" G. Harvey died peacefully Friday, Nov. 28, 2008 at Belle Oakes Assisted Living Center after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

A lifelong resident of Cadillac, Cliff was born on March 2, 1925 to Arthur (A.J.) and Nettie (Racey) Harvey. He graduated from Cadillac High School and received a degree in forestry and business from Michigan State University. On returning to Cadillac, he became the manager of the family-owned Haynes Brothers Lumber Company (the "Big Red Shed"), and later, a self-employed carpenter. On Dec. 11, 1943, Cliff married his high school sweetheart, Joanne (Haynes) Harvey. Their marriage was filled with love, laughter, support, and concern for each other.

Clifford was a 58-year member of the Elks, and in his younger days, a Kiwanian. He was a dedicated blood donor (17 gallons) and volunteered to deliver frozen Meals on Wheels and clean roadsides. He enjoyed euchre, bowling, golf, gardening, and crossword puzzles. He was a quiet, unassuming man who never wasted words and never lost his pleasure in reading or his dry sense of humor. Cliff lived his life believing that humility, integrity, and a sense of humor were a man's greatest attributes.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of almost 65 years, Joanne, and their four children, Pat (Leo) Paveglio of Lapeer and Cadillac, Steve (Nancy) Harvey of Georgia, Sue Hopkins of Oregon and Richard (Marcie Calkin) Harvey of Harrietta. Cliff was loved by his eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Evelyn Falan of Paw Paw and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Cliff was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Howard, Chet and Roy and sister, Erma.

His family is grateful to the many friends and healthcare providers who helped care for Cliff, including Heartland Hospice and the wonderful staff at Belle Oakes Assisted Living Center. Cliff will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 at Peterson Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Continued celebration of Cliff's life will be held from noon to 2 p.m. at the Elks Club.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial to the Alzheimer's Association (1040 Walnut Street, Traverse City, 49686) or a charity of their choice.
