Joanna Sprague, S.L. Librarian, Dies at Age 98

Miss Joanna H. Sprague, who served for 42 years as librarian in the Salt Lake City Public Library, died Saturday in a Salt Lake rest home at age of 98.
Miss Sprague, who liked fiction stories and was fond of poetry and biography, retired from her position as head librarian in 1940. She had started working in the library when it was founded in 1898, and had seen it grow from 26,000 volumes to nearly 200,000 volumes at the time she retired.
Although she had suffered a severe illness in August of last year which limited her activities, she was still noted for her fine sense of humor and keen mind despite her advanced years.
Wisonsin Native
She was born in Madison, Wis., on Sept. 26, 1862, a daughter of Ezra Thompson and Helen Crandall Sprague, and had come to Salt Lake City with her family at the age of 13.
After her retirement in 1940, Miss Sprague lived for many years next door to the public library at 29 S. State.
One of the major honors bestowed on her for her years of library service was the naming of the Sprague Branch Library in Sugar House.
Private Library
Her own library contained some 600 volumes. She read several books and magazines each week and termed detective stories her favorite reading.
She is survived by four nieces and two nephews, Mrs. E. J. Gilbert, Washington, Mrs. Gordon Douglas, Mrs. Milano Rispoli, Miss Bessie Sharp, all of California, Holister T. Sprague, Seattle, Wash., and Brington Sprague, Portland, Ore.
Following Miss Sprague's expressed wished, there will be no services. Private cremation and burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
