Motor racing driver. Hasse was born in Mittweida, Saxony, Germany, and began racing Wanderer motorcycles in 1926. After three years he turned to four wheels and gained success in long distance events. In 1932 he changed to Adler sportscars and continued to excel. In 1936 he signed for the junior team of the mighty Auto Union factory and raced with them until the beginning of WW2. 1937 was his best year with them winning the Belgian GP and racing in 12 championship GPs and eight other major GPs. At the start of WW2 he volunteered but was not accepted straight away but was drafted in 1940 when due to his technical knowledge, he went to the Russian Front to maintain vehicles. Whilst in the Prisoner-of-War Camp 471, he contracted a fatal disease and died in the prison hospital. He was buried in Makeevka(or Makiivka) but owing to the ravages of war, the cemetery was later destroyed.
