This information was recorded by Marjorie Nelson Woodham:
"This story was told to me by my mother, Eva Nelson (daughter of Turissa Woolley Wood). In 1868, Elbert Pinkney and Nancy Mary Boyles Woolley and their five oldest children started out from Selma, Alabama for Texas in wagons pulled by oxen. Some of the Boyles family also came along on the trip. They had to cross the Mississippi by ferry as there were no bridges. While crossing on the ferry, one mule (the only one) jumped off of the ferry and the old dog also jumped in after it. The family felt that this was the last of the mule and old faithful dog. Three days later as they stopped to camp for the night, in walked the mule with the dog following behind. It took them over 3 months to make the trip to Bell County, Texas."
