NEW HAVEN — Elton G. Clevenger, 89, of New Haven, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, surrounded by his family.

He was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Newberne, Gilmer County, a son of the late Alvin M.(A.M.) and Ora Mae (Kirkpatrick) Clevenger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Maysel, in 1992; brothers Avon, Berlin, Hubert, Ruble, Alvin and Clifford Clevenger; and sisters Leo Goff, Ruby Wright, Zela Eckert and Clara Jordan.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving in World War II. He was a member of New Haven United Methodist Church and enjoyed hunting and gardening. He began working for American Electric Power Company's Cabin Creek Plant, Kanawha County, in 1948, transferring to the Philip Sporn Plant in 1957, where he retired in 1988 following 40 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 140 in New Haven and a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics in New Haven.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Joanne (Reese) Horn Clevenger, whom he married in 1996; daughter Charlotte (Bobby Joe) Roush, of New Haven; son Larry (Teresa) Clevenger, of Mason; stepdaughter Sherry (Bob) Poole, of Evans; stepson James (Brenda) Puccio, of Ravenswood; grandchildren Melissa Roush, Donna (Allen) Plants, Chris (Jenny) Clevenger, Jonathan Porter, Jason Porter, R.J. (Sarah) Roush, Brittany (Bill) Chambers, Kayla (Steve) Defren, Allison Poole, Ericka (Carl) Sigley and Mario Puccio; great-grandchildren Brycen Patrick, Bradley Roush, Jaelyn and Jacob Plants, Lily and Zoey Roush, Carson and Raelee Chambers, Joah and Tanner Defren, Trevor and Peyton Sigley, and Mia and Megan Puccio; and several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express gratitude and many thanks to the nurses and staff of Pleasant Valley Home Health and Hospice, Dr. Dayal, Holzer Hospital, and special caregivers Jackie Paugh, Kathy Dailey and Sue Zurcher, who all provided such loving and compassionate care.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at Foglesong Funeral Home, Mason, with the Rev. Annette Carper and the Rev. Jerry Clevenger officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Memorial Gardens, Letart, with military honors provided by American Post Legion Post 140, New Haven. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, at the funeral home.
