Safeway Manager and Farmer
Archie Gartrell Sr., 85, a retired manager of the meat department at Safeway Stores and a Montgomery County farmer, died Feb. 24 at Montgomery General Hospital of pneumonia and Parkinson's disease.
Mr. Gartrell was born on a farm in Brookeville in the house where he was living at the time of his death.
He worked for Safeway for 40 years before he retired in 1967, and he also operated a cattle and grain farm.
Survivors include his wife, Eloise Gartrell of Brookeville; three daughters, LaDorne Hart and Ann Stabler, both of Brookeville, and Mary Ball G. Opie of Engelhard, N.C.; two sons, Archie Gartrell Jr. of Burtonsville and Benjamin F. Gartrell of Ednor, Md.; one sister, Virginia Hersperger of Poolesville; 13 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
