Jesse Merwin, a sixth generation Merwin in North America, was a farmer and school teacher. He was a close friend of famed writer Washington Irving, and in real life was the model for Irving's Ichabod Crane in The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. Jesse married Jane (Van Dyck) Merwin and had 11 children. Jesse and Jane are buried in Old Kinderhook Cemetery, also known locally as The Dutch Reformed Cemetery. Originally he was buried nearby in the Methodist-Episcopal Churchyard, a church of which he was a founder. The church property was later sold, and his remains moved to Old Kinderhook Cemetery. Jesse is the son of Daniel Merwin and Rebecca (Seward) Merwin. Daniel is buried in the Old Riverside Cemetery, Bloomville, NY.
