Marjorie B. Mesick
August 13, 2004
Marjorie Belle Baker Mesick, 87, passed away peacefully. She was born in Provo, UT, but moved as a child to Clearwater, FL. Part of a musical family, "Midge" won an award for being the best trumpet player, ages 12-18, in Florida at age 12. While attending the U. of Alabama, she took a year off to work as a chief-of-staff to the first woman to serve in the Florida State Legislature, her sister Marylou Baker. Midge attended medical school in Heidelberg, Germany, returning stateside before WWII to enter Syracuse U.'s medical school as the only female student to be accepted at that time. Midge liked to say that she "earned her M.D. the easy way" when she dropped out of school to marry Dr. M. Rowland Mesick. They were married 52 years before his death in 1992. Midge was an active member of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile. She enjoyed traveling, reading and "playing" the stock market, and was an avid knitter and sewer for many charitable causes.
Midge had a quick and witty sense of humor and an intellect that led to a wide-ranging fascination with learning and doing. Her love and affection will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Midge is survived by her son Martin Lee Mesick of Syracuse; her daughter and son-in-law, Martha "Babs" Mesick Savitt and Robert P. Savitt of Myersville, MD; five grandchildren and one great-grandson-to-be.
No services are planned.
Contributions may be sent to the Tully Area Historical Society, c/o Eleanor Preston, 24 State Street, PO Box 22, Tully, NY 13159.
