James Louis Munson, Sr., 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 21st, in Natchitoches, LA.

He was born in 1934 in St. Joseph, Louisiana to Thelma Lena Walls and William Anthony Munson. He grew up on the Mississippi River, and he was an avid sportsman.

He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Raye Keyes, and together they had 5 children. They raised their family in St. Francisville, Louisiana.

“Captain Jim” was actively involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a boat captain, and he loved to hunt and fish. He and his brother ran a successful swamp tour that introduced the bayou wildlife and Cajun culture to thousands across the world.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his two sons, James Louis Munson, Jr. and John Raymond Munson as well as his wife, Shirley Raye Keyes Munson. He was also preceded in death by his brother, William Paul “Bill” Munson.

He is survived by his three sisters Virginia Mize, Mary Call, and Audrey Shumway.

He is also survived by his daughters: Leah Broadwater and her husband Preston Broadwater, Michelle Munson Hall, and Lolli Gonzales and her husband Jeffrey Gonzales. “Papa” is also survived by his grandchildren, Laura Rogers (Ron) , Brandon Rogers (Amber), Gabrielle, Maddy, Izzy, Logan, Leyton Gonzales, Brantley, Kyle, and Zachary Hall, Shannon Pigron (Jimmy), Ariel, Emily Munson, Ryan Spillman, Windy Vaccaro (Christopher). and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Weaver United Methodist Church, located at the intersection of Hwy 120 and Hwy 478 in Flora, LA. Interment will follow at Weaver Cemetery in Flora, Louisiana.

Pallbearers will be Preston Broadwater, Ron Dellinger, Brandon Rogers, Jeffrey Gonzales, Kyle Smith, Lawrence Bergeron, and Bruce Baker.
