(This is only a cenotaph. Rev's body is buried in Trenton, NJ where he died).

REV. JOHN WAS A PRESBYTERIAN CHAPLAIN, IN THE 3RD BATTALION OF NORTHAMPTON CO., IN THE MALITIA/CONTINENTAL ARMY DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. HE WAS BAYONETED BY HESSIAN SOLDIERS OUTSIDETHE BLAZING STAR TAVERN IN TRENTON ON JAN. 2, 1777 AND BECAME THE FIRST CLERICAL MARTYR OF THE REVOLUTION.

John's wife #1 Sarah ( nee? ) and (possibly their first child) is buried in the Moravian Cem in Hope, NJ. Sarah's death may have resulted in John's decision to become a minister. He graduated from what is now Princeton NJ in 1761. Licensed as a Presby. Minister in 1763.

John married (1766) wife #2 Jane Ralston, daughter of Mr. James Ralston from Allen Township, Northampton Co. PA. Mr. Ralston built a fort on his farm and is called Fort Ralston. Remains of the fort can still be seen today.

Rev John and Jane lived in what is now known as E. Allen Twp and had 5 children.(I grew up in that house).

Jane died on March 27, 1809 at age 70 and is buried in the Allen Township Presbyterian Cemetery, which is now E. Allen Twp. (Northampton Co., PA). The cemetery is called Horner's Cemetery, possibly named after the largest family buried there. The abandoned cemetery is now restored and maintained...peggymaymoser@hotmail.com
