Thomas Farish, his son, Thomas Jr. and his older brother Robert were killed in the explosion of Winter Quarter #4, a coal mine, at Scofield, Utah May 5,1900. This was a tragedy beyond comprehension on the frontier. There were no support services, no insurance, no government relief. Widows were left alone to raise large familys and some how fend for themselves. Each deceased miner received a new suit of clothes (if he was intact) and a coffin. Also he received a roughed out R I P style, wooden headstone with his name written in pencil! One source tells me over half the 200 names were misspelled. Each widow received $500.00 from the mine. It was a black day in Scofield. 4 weeks later the mine reopen with a fresh crew of miners.
