Samuel Seaton Adkins served as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company B of the 5th Kentucky Infantry Regiment, C.S.A., during the War of Northern Aggression, 1861-1865. He was captured by the enemy and was part of a group of Confederate officers who were used as human shields in front of Union guns based at Fort Wagner, on Morris Island, near Charleston SC. These Confederate officers are now known as the "Immortal 600".
