Private in the all-black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company I. Enlisted on 28 April 1863 from Columbus, Ohio. He was 24 years old, married and working as a farmer when he enlisted. He was wounded in action - a gunshot wound to the chest - on 18 July 1863 at Fort Wagner, and discharged 25 February 1864 in Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island.
