Joe P. "Rusty" Matthews, 87, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2015 at his residence in Hawley, TX.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 7457 West Lake Rd., Abilene, TX under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joe was born on July 6, 1928 in Amarillo, TX to the late B.S. Matthews and Tommie Huffman Matthews.

Joe was a member of the American Legion and of VFW.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters, Bessie Abel and Floy Matthews; and a daughter, Judy Marie Matthews.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Matthews; four sons, Hyram and Jackie Matthews, and Mark and Joe Caywood; two daughters, Diann Stallings and Vonda Cauthen; four brothers, Burley, Stanley, Richard, and Lynn Matthews; two sisters, Mary Ann Grisham and Dorothy Duvall; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
