Herbert, a prominent clergyman and the second rector of St. Margaret's Church in Washington, DC, presided at the wedding of President Woodrow Wilson and Edith Bolling Galt on December 18, 1915. It was a private ceremony held at the bride’s spacious Washington, D.C., home.

Herbert never married, and lived with his sister Carolene, who served as his hostess.
