Andrew "Sherlock" Holmes, 86 of Nortonville, passed away Sunday morning at NHC in Madisonville. He was born March 28, 1929, in Mannington to the late Andrew Holmes, Sr. and the late Abbie Hunt Holmes. Andrew graduated from Nortonville High School in 1948, he then became a coal miner at Williams Mines and Sinclair Mines and was a member of UMWA District 23. He served his community as Mayor of Nortonville and on the City Council. He also was a long time mason at the N.H. Shaw Lodge No. 608. "Sherlock" never met a stranger and had a love for classic cars, UK basketball, hunting and fishing.
Andrew is also preceded in death by his brother, Harold Holmes; and sister, Marion Crook.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Doris Stembridge Holmes; three sons, Greg Holmes of Louisville, Dwight (Mauretta) Holmes of Madisonville, and Terry (Robin) Holmes of Murray; four grandchildren, Tristan Holmes, Jessica Blue, Ian Holmes, and Victoria Holmes.
Services will be held on Wednesday, October 21, at 1:00p.m. at Bandy Funeral Home with Bro. Leon Smith officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Bethlehem Cemetery in Madisonville. Masonic Rites will be held Tuesday at 7:00p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will be from 5p.m. - 8p.m. Tuesday and after 11a.m. on Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Tristan Holmes, Ian Holmes, Dustin Blue, William Hunt, Larry Keith, and Buddy Rodgers.
