Mr. Walter Joe Pitts, 80, of Whiteville, NC died Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at Columbus Regional Healthcare System. He was born August 19, 1925 in Bridgeport, TX the son of the late John Duke and Caroline Budil Pitts.

Joe graduated from Jacksboro High School in 1942 and the University of North Texas with a Bachelor's and Master's degree. His postgraduate work was at the University of Texas. He was a retired superintendent for the Texas public school system, and the director of education and training at the largest job corps in the nation. He served his country during WWII as a member of the 3rd Marine Battalion at the battle of Iwo Jima and Guam. He was a 32nd Degree Master Mason. He spent his life helping others.

Funeral services with masonic rites were Saturday, August 19, 2006 with graveside services at the Fentress Community Cemetery in Fentress, Texas.

He is survived by two daughters, Dr. Kathleen Matlock of Whiteville and Molly Hilton and husband, Dr. James Hilton of Charlottesville, VA; four grandchildren, Heather Springs Gash and Shannon Springs, both of Whiteville, Michael Hilton and Meghan Hilton, both of Charlottesville, VA; a great grandchild, Katelyn Gash.
