SERVED WITH THE 91ST PA INFANRTRY DURING THE CIVIL WAR.


The son of Jacob & Anna (Smith) Wertz, in 1850 the family lived in Manor Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was a farmer living in Tyrone Township, Adams County, and stood 5' 10" tall with light hair and hazel eyes. He married York County-born Catherine Ninetta Spangler and fathered Jennie E. (b. 04/13/63 - married a Rahm), Emma (b. 05/15/64 - married William G. Tipton), Annie L. (b. @1864), Hester Ann (b. 03/30/75 - married George Fitzgerald), and Carrie B. (b. 11/08/88).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 28, 1865, as a private with Co. G, 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 10, 1865.

In 1890, he lived in Straban Township, Adams County, where he died from "carcinoma of stomach" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor. His birth certificate claims 1838 as his year of birth, but he said otherwise in his pension application.
