Sgt Horine served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War 2. Sgt Horine was the tailgunner on B-24D (#42-40364) named Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. On August 1, 1943, Horine's bomber was part of the mission to attack the oil facilities at Ploesti. After the mission one of the other bombers was damaged by enemy fighters. Snow White slowed down to help cover the damaged bomber. When Snow White moved in to cover the damaged bomber, they were shot down by fighters. Horine was the only crew member to bailout and survive. Badly injured with a head wound and burned hands, Horine was captured and sent to the Shumen POW Camp near the Black Sea. On September 8, 1944 the Red Army freed the POWs.

Staff Sergeant Horine was a gunner aboard U.S. Air Force B-29-50-MO Superfortress #44-86364. While on a "round robbin" training flight from Spokane Air Force Base, with a mock bombing target to Stockton, California, then onward to Ogden, Utah, then return home, tragedy struck at 23:45 hours on the night of November 16th, 1949. Two in the group of thirteen Superfortresses collided at 26,000 feet above Stockton and plunged to earth in flaming wreckage. Only one airman, PFC Keith Burns, age 19, aboard ship #364 survived by bailing out in time and parachuted safely to ground. S/Sgt. Horine and eight other fliers perished when the aircraft impacted McDonald Island in the San Joaquin Delta, 9 miles to the northwest. Two crewmembers parachuted to safety from the other B-29 (#44-69939) but nine were killed when it impacted in 6-10 feet of mud on Rindge Tract, about 2 miles further north of this crashsite.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Air Medal...and a Purple Heart with "6 Oak Leaf Clusters."
