Charles L. “Bucky” VanSant, 81, of Upper Deerfield Township died peacefully at his home Thursday evening October 8, 2015 following an extended illness.

The husband of Delores L. (nee Tarquinio) VanSant, he was born in Bridgeton on March 1, 1934 and was the son of the late Theodore F. “Dutch” VanSant and the late Margaret H. (nee Ireland) VanSant. A lifelong Bridgeton area resident, Bucky was a graduate of Bridgeton High School in 1952 and married Delores in November of 1953. He served in the US Army for three years and had been employed as a supervisor and foreman at the former Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton until the plant closed in 1984. During his “retirement years” he worked for his nephew, Ricky Slade, at Ricky Slade Construction for nearly 20 years.

An avid sportsman, Bucky played varsity sports in high school and later was a pitcher in the Bridgeton Industrial Softball league for Hummel’s Liquors for a number of years. He also enjoyed playing golf as a hobby.

In addition to his wife of nearly 62 years, he is survived by one son, Lane VanSant and his wife Marge of Upper Deerfield Twp., one daughter, Roxanne Meloy and her husband S. Bryan of Upper Twp., five grandchildren, Lane VanSant Jr., Colby and Ellie Meloy, Victor Castrati and his wife Christine and Ashley Crispin and her husband Frank and three great grandchildren, Parker, Dominic and Caleb.

He is also survived by two sisters, Flora M. Rajacich and her husband Zarko of Hopewell Twp. And Mary E. Heath and her husband Ray of Upper Deerfield Twp., two brothers, Theodore M. “Ted” VanSant and his wife Edith of St. Augustine, FL and Douglas L. VanSant and his wife Theresa of Bridgeton and several nieces and nephews.

Bucky was predeceased by a son, Brian A. VanSant in 1995 and a sister, Peggy A. Kenelia in 2008.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Thursday afternoon October 15th at 2:30 where friends will be received from 12:30 until 2:30..

The interment will take place at Laurel Lawn Cemetery in Upper Deerfield Twp.
