Lillian Sylvia Oline Loe, fifth child of Erick and Hannah (Hinseth) Loe, was born March 14, 1918 on the family farm two miles west of Irene, South Dakota. She died at the age of 97 years, 7 months, and 2 days on October 16, 2015 at Sunset Manor in Irene. She was a lifelong resident of Yankton County.

She was baptized May 19, 1918 and confirmed November 21, 1932 at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Irene. She graduated from Irene High School with the class of 1936.

On June 28, 1953, Lillian was united in marriage to Merle B. Johnson at Salem Lutheran Church. They made their home on a farm two miles south of her birthplace and continued farming there until 1998 when they retired and moved to Yankton. This union was blessed with two children, Deborah Ellen and Pamela June. Lillian and Merle celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June 2003. Merle died in November 2004 and Pamela died in November 2014. After a brief hospital stay, Lillian moved to Sunset Manor in July 2015.

Lillian was principally a homemaker and farm wife but also worked on occasion outside the home. Before her marriage, she was employed at the Johnson & Iverson department store in Irene. She later worked at Gurney Seed and Nursery in Yankton and at Sunset Manor.

Lillian was an accomplished pianist and organist. She began playing the organ at Salem Lutheran Church when she was 12 years old and continued to play the organ for the next 70 years. She played at various churches, including Calvary Lutheran Church and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, and was the primary organist for Hansen Funeral Home. She accompanied choirs and many soloists in high school as well as for weddings and funerals throughout her career. Lillian loved music of all types, particularly sacred music. She enjoyed singing as well as playing the organ.

She was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church and Calvary Lutheran Church, holding many offices in Luther League and various women’s groups in the church such as Dorcas Society, Ladies Aid, ALCW, and WELCA. She taught Sunday School at both churches and served on the building committee for Calvary Lutheran Church. She also was a founding member and held various offices of the Sunset Manor Auxiliary, which helped raise funds for the building of the nursing home as well as maintenance after it was built.

She enjoyed hand work such as crocheting and embroidery, and was a talented seamstress. She was interested in genealogy and has compiled extensive information about her family. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, fluent in the Norwegian language, and was privileged to have been able to take a trip to visit relatives in Oppdal, Norway, where her father and grandfather Stengrim Hinseth were born and lived until immigrating to the United States.

Lillian was a kind and gentle person, always caring for others first. She fully lived as a servant of Christ. She was a dedicated family person and her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brothers Sidney and Ernest Loe, sisters Mattie Loe and Signe Brunsvig, and daughter Pamela Murra.

She is survived by her daughter Deborah (Stephen) Lamb of Atlantic, Iowa; son-in-law Vern Murra of Sioux Falls; grandchildren Erika (Brandon) Cave of Manhattan, Kansas and Kaarin (Bradley) Fasse of Grimes, Iowa; great-grandchildren Sonja and Klara Cave and Hannah and Emma Fasse; brother Maynard Loe of Irene; step grandchildren Arlana (Andrew) Spillum of Phoenix, Arizona, Alan (Mindy) Murra of Tea, April (Stephen) Crockett of Andover, Minnesota, and Aaron (Melanie) Murra of Fargo, North Dakota; step great-grandchildren Keenan and Isaac Spillum, Olivia and Noah Crockett, and Ashton and Annabel Murra; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
