Edward Carlson (Eduard Carlsen) was born at Hamburg, Germany, about 1833, and emigrated to California. Edward, age 27 years, was enumerated at Shasta County, California, June 2, 1860 (1860 US Census). During the Civil War he was enlisted by Captain Benjamin R. West as a private at Shasta, Shasta County, September 19, and then proceeded with the new recruits to Auburn, where he arrived October 2. He was mustered in and appointed Fourth Sergeant in Company C, 4th California Infantry, on October 5, 1861. At enlistment Edward stated he was born in Hamburg, Germany, and was 28 years old and his occupation Assayer. His enlistment contract described him as being 5 feet 6 inches tall with a dark complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. Edward was on Extra Duty as Quartermaster’s Clerk at Regimental Headquarters from October 28, 1861. He was appointed Regiment Commissary Sergeant October 26, with an effective date of October 1, 1862. Edward was on attached service at Fort Mojave, Arizona Territory, from May 12, 1863. He was discharged on a Surgeon’s Certificate September 19, 1863, after being examined by First Lieutenant W. S. Strong at Fort Mojave, who diagnosed him with a hernia. The discharge was signed by Captain Jesse Ives Fitch. Edward returned to Shasta County, California, where he became a U.S. citizen November 9, 1863. Edward, now 32 years old, accepted a 1st lieutenant's commission and was mustered in at the Presidio of San Francisco, where he was appointed Regimental Quartermaster, 8th California Infantry, on September 25, 1865. He was assigned at Fort Point (San Francisco) September 28 and was mustered out at Fort Point on October 24, 1865. His record indicated that he was never paid. Edward, age 39 years, registered to vote at Sacramento, California, July 18,1872. Edward, age 44 years, a merchant residing at 2622 Bush Street, San Francisco, registered to vote April 24, 1878. Edward Carlson, age 47 years merchant, Harriette née Vale Carlson, 41, born England, C. Hadley Carlson, 13, Ferdinand W. Carlson, 7, Edna F. Carlson, 4, Gertrude M. Carlson, 10 months, Charles Vale, 65, father-in-law, hardware merchant, were enumerated at San Francisco, June 5, 1880 (1880 US Census). Edward, age 47 years, a merchant residing at 1708 Sacramento Street, San Francisco, registered to vote August 27, 1880. Edward, age 49 years, a merchant residing at 1708 Sacramento Street, San Francisco, registered to vote August 9, 1882. Edward, age 53 years, a merchant residing at 1768 Sacramento Street, San Francisco, registered to vote September 22, 1886. Edward, age 55 years, a merchant residing at 1922 Sutter Street, San Francisco, registered to vote September 17, 1888. He was issued a U.S. Passport, No. 23,549, December 7, 1888. When Edward signed the passport application at San Francisco November 30, 1888, he described himself as age 55 years, 5 feet 8 inches, with a high forehead, brown eyes, small mouth, round chin, gray hair, light complexion, long face. In support of the application he solely swore that he was born at Hamburg, Germany, June 2, 1833, and emigrated from Liverpool, England, in 1856 and was naturalized before the Ninth District Court of California at Shasta County, November 9, 1863. Edward, age 57 years, a merchant residing at 1922 Sutter Street, San Francisco, registered to vote September 15, 1890. He filed from California for a Civil War veteran's pension March 18, 1891, and received application No. 1,031,151 and certificate No. 848,851 (Pension File, NARA). Edward, a merchant residing at 2324 Fulton near Durant Avenue, Berkeley, Alameda County, registered to vote September 13, 1892, and March 2, 1896.

Friends are invited to attend the funeral services tomorrow (Sunday), at 2 o’clock, at 320 Post Street, under the auspices of George H. Thomas Post, No. 2, G.A.R. Interment strictly private.
