Passed away peacefully Sunday morning March 20, 2011 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Portage, Michigan, where she resided the past 6 years. Nan was born on June 10, 1924 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to her parents, Laverne James and Lillian Wetherbee. She had been a member of St. Lukes Church and the Cathedral Church of Christ the King. She married Daniel Earle Lusso on October 20, 1951, who preceeded her in death on March 18, 1994. She is survived by her brother Laverne James Jr. and sister-in-law Marilyn Wetherbee of Northport, MI. Her children Gregory (Linda) Lusso of Kalamazoo, Rondi (Thomas) Winkels of Portage, Rebecca (Randall) Beaty of Charlotte, N.C. and Timothy (Diane) Lusso of Warrenton, VA. Her grandchildren Courtney ( Christopher) Slater of Kalamazoo, Andrew (Karlee) Lusso of Otsego, Jodi(Jack) Klunder of Lake City, Jeffrey and Ryan Winkels of Portage, Sean Beaty of Charlotte, N.C., Alexander Beaty of Wilmington, N.C., Troy Beaty of Charlotte, N.C., Jonathon Lusso of Warrenton, VA, her great granddaughter, Kali Lusso, of Otsego and several nieces and nephews.
Nan graduated from Western State High School in Kalamazoo and from Kalamazoo College in 1946, where she majored in Biology and Art. She was also a member of Alpha Sigma Delta Society. She was employed by Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, MD., where she worked in diagnostics and research bacteriology. She helped develop the Pneumococcal Vaccination. She was later employed by the Upjohn Company Bacteriological Department and continued as a Lab Technologist for several local Physicians until her retirement in 1999 at the age of 75.
Nan will be greatly missed and was loved and admired by all her family. Her hobbies included walking nature trails, reading and being involved in her children and grandchildren's activities.
Nan's family wishes to thank the kind and compassionate staff at Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, especially her nurse Sidney. Her family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. According to her wishes cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Kalamazoo at a later date.
