In Memory of
Floy Patterson

July 5, 1926 - October 10, 2015

Funeral services are scheduled for Floy Patterson at the Chapel of Laurel Land Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 2:00 PM. Visitation will be an hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Mike Walker, retired pastor of Tyler Street United Methodist Church and Ed Lantz, senior pastor of TSUMC. Burial will be at Laurel Land Memorial Park. Floy died Saturday night, October 10, at Grace Presbyterian Village where she had lived for the past six years. She was 89.

Helen Floy Poston Patterson was born July 5, 1926 to Joseph Tully and Winnifred Evie Pou Poston in Dallas, Texas. After her father died in 1931, the family lived for a time in the Odd Fellows Home in Corsicana, later relocating to a farm in the Mabank area of East Texas where her parents were from. Life was hard during the Depression years, but Floy stayed in school and graduated from Mabank High School in 1943. In June 1944, she was accepted into the cadet nursing program. She attended the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Dallas where she graduated in 1947 as a registered nurse. She remained close friends with five of her classmates, Audean, Dot, Evelyn, Joyce, and Virginia, for over 67 years.

It was while she was attending nursing school that Floy met, through another classmate, a young college student named Horace Patterson who was a cousin of the classmate’s fiancé. Floy and Horace were married January 30, 1948 during that winter’s memorable ice storm. They were happily married for almost 47 years until Horace’s death in January 1995.

Floy was active in Sunday School and church at Tyler Street United Methodist Church for over 54 years. You could always count on her to bring something good to eat for socials, especially her homemade pies and cakes. You would usually find her helping to set up the food and clean up the kitchen.

Preceded in death by her parents and husband, brother, Joe Houston Poston, and twin brother, Harland Loy (Dub) Poston, Floy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Gary Vermillion; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sherrie Patterson; grandson, John Mark Patterson; and great grandson, Nicholas Patterson. Also, surviving are her sister, Elaine Faircloth; her sister-in-law, Marie Poston; and her brother-in-law and his wife, Drake and Marlene Patterson, along with several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by many friends, especially her dear friend, Ann Morell. She loved Ann and the weekly cards that she sent.

Thank you to Grace Presbyterian Village and Faith Presbyterian Hospice for the care she received. Memorials can be made to Tyler Street United Methodist Church, Tyler Street Christian Academy, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Art Museum, or Dallas Zoo. She loved them all. But most of all, she loved her family.
