Son of Benjamin Workman and Ann Scott.

He was a teacher. In 1787 he emigrated to Philadelphia with his brother , Benjamin, where, for three years, he was a college English master. He returned to Ireland about 1790/91 and on June 13,1792 he married Catherine Gowdey (Goudie/Gowdie/Gowdy)(Feb.13,1769-Mar.8,1871), one of his students. She was a daughter of Alexander Gowdey.
They eight sons and a daughter before leaving Ireland for Montreal, Canada.

(1) Benjamin (1794-1878), medical doctor in Montreal; married first to Margaret Manson (1792-1829), widow of Thomas Manson (who were married in 1809) on June 24, 1823; and second to Mary Ann Mills (1809-1843) on Oct.14,1838. Three known children from second marriage: two daughters and a son.

(2) Alexander (1798-1891), Mayor of Ottawa. He married Mary Abbott (1803-1874) about 1823 in Montreal. The family later moved to Ottawa.

(3) John Scott (1803-1829) died of cholera in New Glasgow, Quebec. He married Mary Ann Quinn about 1828. their daughter, Margaret Manson Workman, who was born in 1830 after his death. Mary Ann later married Alexander Gowdey on Nov.20,1837 and had two children with him, Catherine and Alexander Jr. Mary Ann is buried in Huntingdon, Quebec.

(4) Joseph (1805-1894), medical doctor, superintendent of Toronto Lunatic Asylum for 22 years; chairman of Toronto Board of Education. He married Elizabeth Wasnidge (1813-1885) on May 30, 1835 in Montreal. They had seven sons and three daughters but only five survived to adulthood.

(5) William (1807-1878), Mayor of Montreal; married Eliza Bethell (1805-1885). They had eight children. Only two daughters and a son survived to adulthood.

(6) Ann (1809-1882) married Henry Mulholland on Apr. 17,1834; he was in the hardware business. They had three known children, likely others whose names aren't currently known.

(7) Samuel (1811-1869) was in the hardware business in Montreal. He married Mary Ann Wilson (1825-1897).

(8) Thomas (1813-1889) was Federal M.P. for Montreal; later became a milliionaire. He married Annabelle Eadie (1822-1889) on Sept.10,1845. They had no children.

(9) Matthew Francis (1815-1839) died of consumption; he was unmarried.
