Mildred B. Gilliard, 77, formerly of Georgetown, died on May 29, 2013, of natural causes in Evans, Ga.

She was born on November 20, 1935, a daughter of James Benbow and Mrs. Hazel Westbury Benbow.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Georgetown, conducted by the Rev. Dr. M. Charmaine Ragin.

Burial followed in Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Georgetown.

After having accepted Christ at an early age, Mildred joined Target AME Church in Holly Hill, S.C. and began what would be a journey of sustained Christian stewardship. The Lord used her to bless the lives of those who did not know Him. Rosenwald Elementary School and Roberts High School nurtured her and were the foundation of her early and secondary education.

With a continuing commitment to excellence, Mildred furthered her education at South Carolina State University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree and the Master of Arts Degree in education.

She loved working with children and spent almost her entire career in the Georgetown County School System providing unstinted leadership and service during 35 years of teaching.

The crowning of her many contributions came when she was named "Teacher of the Year" twice in her career, an honor well earned and much deserved. Even after retirement, Mildred could not give up her dedication to educating young people. Thus, she returned to the school system and served as a volunteer.

Mildred fell in love with and married Benjamin "Lucky" Gilliard. He was indeed "Lucky"! Until his death in 1977 they shared the charms and sweetness of a loving relationship.

To this union, two beautiful, talented and loving daughters were born. Mildred's maternal instincts were brilliantly shown through her relationship with her daughters. She was a dedicated mother, who motivated her girls to develop all of their God given talents.

They indeed made their mother very proud.

Benjamin and Mildred became active members of First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church as a young couple where they served willingly and faithfully as Sunday School teachers and worked in various ministries of the church for many years.

In her walk with Christ at Bethel AME Church she served with the Missionary Society, the Trustee Board, and Chancellor Choir.

All who knew her were struck by her quiet, yet reassuring words of encouragement. "It's going to be fine", she often said. Nowhere was this positive attitude more evident than in association with her beloved Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Her leadership and involvement with numerous committees were invaluable as she gave tirelessly of time and talent to community service projects and programs.

In addition to contributions to her sorority, Mildred enjoyed cooking, sewing, reading, traveling with book club friends as far away as to Italy.

Gardening, going fishing with friend, mentor and neighbor, Marie Greene, volunteering at the Rice Museum, Keep Georgetown Beautiful, and the Georgetown Auxiliary at the Hospital were all passions of hers. She was an unusually positive and energetic lady and her favorite lines were, "I don't like negativity" and "Always do the right thing."

To forever cherish loving memories, Mildred leaves behind two daughters, Mrs. Andrea G. Alford (Alexander) of Morristown, Tenn.; Mrs. Anita G. Houser (Michael) of Grovetown, Ga.; four grandchildren, Kristina Alford, Alexander Alford III, Michael Houser Jr., and Benjamin Houser; nieces: Detra D. Small, Tina Gilliard-Rice, Deborah Shaw, Patricia Middleeton, Trene' Green, Gussie Smith and Juanita Ladson; nephews, Donald Gilliard, Martin Gilliard Jr., Byron Gilliard and Curtis D. Benbow, Eric Gilliard, Dedrick Gilliard and James Allen Gilliard Jr.; a sister-in-law, Jacquelyn D. Benbow; a brother-in-law, James Gilliard; adopted nieces, JoAnn G. Allen and Winifred D. Lewis; an adopted brother-in-law, Earl Farrow; a dear friend, Cynthia Cavanaugh and a host of other very special relatives and friends.

Arrangements were entrusted to Wilds Funeral Home, LLC.
