Benjamin Eugene "Ben" Merrill Sr., 83, a former resident of Fairhope and a resident of Church Hill, Tenn., died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, surrounded by his family.
He served as an example to his family, a shelter in the storm and the type of person at the end of their lives they hope they have been. He was a faithful deacon for 12 years at Fairhope Avenue Baptist and served on many committees with special friends Sam Vaughn, Earl Stevens and John McDonald to further the cause of Christ.
He and his loving wife Lurene of 50 years, moved to Church Hill in October of 2008 to spend time with their sons and grandchildren. He spent his life in the electrical construction industry and moved into supervision were he mentored many young folks in the electrical craft to further the vocation.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Myra Merrill, and a brother Roy Merrill Jr.
Survivors include his caring wife, Lurene T. Merrill; three sons, Jim (Angie) Collier, Ben (Diane) Merrill and Frank (Lora) Merrill; three daughters Margaret Ellen (Arthur) Jones, Myra (Mike) Henry and Leonide Seals; two sisters Betty Jane (Tommy) Wright and Myra Lou Marquisll and many grandchildren, whom he loved as much as his own children.
Special thanks to Dr. Randy McLaughlin, Alice Johnson RN and Renee Skelton RN for treating him as their own dad in his time of need.
Visitation begins at 5 p.m. with funeral services at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 at Carter Trent Funeral Home in Church Hill, Tenn with Pastor James Hill of Fairhope Avenue Baptist officiating.
