Lewis J. "L.J." Crain

Lewis James "L.J." Crain, 76, of Clifton Road, Versailles, husband of Doris Jean Crain, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at his home.

Born in Dunklin Co., Mo., on Dec. 16, 1924, he was the son of the late Ferdinand Desoto and Rose Ann Green Crain. The youngest of five children, he traveled with his father during his childhood, attending several schools in three states before moving to Versailles to live with his brother, William Crain. After graduating from Versailles High School in 1942, he entered military service and served in the 8th Air Force during World War II.

Following his marriage on Nov. 13, 1945, he attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He had taken a part-time job installing power poles with Northern States Power Co. during college, and after graduation joined the firm. During his 30-year career he lived in Sioux Falls, S.D., Grand Forks, N.D., and several cities in Minnesota before moving to St. Paul, where he retired as vice president of the company. He moved back to Versailles in 1987 and joined the Versailles Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and an adult Sunday school class teacher.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Allen Foster, and a granddaughter, Rebecca Foster, of Sauk Rapids, Minn.; two nephews, Benjamin Crain, Versailles, and Donald Joe Holland, W. Memphis, Tenn.; and a niece, Ann Shelburn, of Stanford. Two sisters, Monedith Williams and Leatrice Holland, and two brothers, William Crain and Paul Crain, are deceased. His brother William was a former Woodford County sheriff and county clerk whose widow, Frances Crain, resides in Woodford County.

Services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the Versailles Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Shawn Barkley. Burial was in the Versailles Cemetery. Casket bearers were Ralph Carpenter, Stuart Brown, Ron Kinnius, Elliot Vittitow, Bill Williams, and Charlie Christensen. Memorials may be made to the Versailles Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 130 N. Main St., Versailles 40383.
