His parents were Edward "Ned" Barnes and Mary "Polly" Shipley, both natives of Wilkes county, N.C. whose respective families migrated from N.C. to Fayette, Kentucky before 1793.He married Isabella "Ibby" Wiseman on March 15, 1836 in Estill Kentucky, the daughter of Abner Wisemann and Isabell Blanton. They had 13 children, all of whom lived well into adulthood (several to over 90 years of age.) The family moved to Iowa in the 1840's with other Barnes' relatives going West. He remarried after Ibby's death to Margaret Horn (born 1828 in Monehan, Ireland) on July 23, 1892 in Bloomfield, Davis, Iowa.
